JEWELRY CARE

Opal is a unique, beautiful and delicate gemstone,
which demands little more care and tender treatment when worn, cleaned and stored.
CLEAN YOUR OPAL JEWELRY

Never immerse opal wood jewelry into water or any other liquid.  Water may weaken the bond between the stone and the epoxy used to hold it in the setting.

Do not use ultrasonic cleaning.

Simply wipe it gently with a moist cloth is a quick way to maintain.

Always use very soft cloth since paper, polyester, and coarse fabrics often contain synthetics, which impart fine scratches.

The wood finish of your ring is carefully considered.

To maintain its finish, simply buff wood with pure beeswax polish.

PROTECT  YOUR OPAL WOOD JEWELRY

Exposure to harsh chemicals or abrasive solutions can spoil colored gems.

Opal, a porous stone, absorbs liquids that can affect its color and erode the finish and polish of the stone. Do not use bleach, toothpaste or abrasive to clean opal and never soak opal in alkalis and acids such as nail polish remover.

Household chemicals which contain ammonia is a particular threat to delicate gem.

It is sometimes best to remove your jewelry.

Think of it as the final touch and put it on right before you get on with your day.

HANDLING YOUR OPAL WOOD JEWELRY

Specifically when removing rings, you should always ensure to pick it up by its band, not by the stone or setting. This will help to keep the opal secure in its setting as well as preventing natural oils from your hands building up around the stone.

Opal is a soft and brittle stone, has approximately the same hardness as glass (around 5.5 – 6.5 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness).  It can be broken, chipped, scratched with heavy wear and tear. Even an accumulation of tiny scratches on an opal will dull its appearance over time.

STORING YOUR OPAL WOOD JEWELRY

Beware extreme temperature and humidity variations

The very structure that creates opal will sometimes lead to “crazing”, a series of interlacing circular cracks.  It is caused by stresses induced when excessive or rapid loss of moisture occurs. Avoid harsh, dry conditions, prolonged sun exposure and extreme changes in temperature that could cause your opal to crack or craze.  Once an opal begins to develop tiny cracks, it is unsalvageable.

A moderate temperature with certain humidity is the ideal climate for storage.
